trope i really like is self-loathing characters desperate for the catharsis of punishment for frankly rather selfish reasons who r also obsessed with repeatedly pressing others into hating them and hurting them as essentially a method of self harm. yes baby continue making it worse for urself and everybody around u instead of doing an actually productive and effective journey of improvement

As we head into multiple viral outbreaks including potentially H5N1, I am begging people to think carefully about how they talk about these viruses. It has been exhausting since the start of COVID hearing people talk about "only people with pre existing conditions" as if that makes everything okay. I am worth something, we are worth something, our lives matter.

Obsessed with characters who portray themselves as worse than they are. Who are lying to everyone including themselves about it. People generally assume if someone's lying about themselves they're trying to look better but sometimes they're trying to look worse. They attribute agency to where they had none, add intent to accidents, try to convince everyone that this is something they did instead of something that happened to them.

Of the 19 hijackers who carried out the Sept 11 attacks:
15 were from Saudi Arabia (a powerful/oil-rich country the U.S. works hard to maintain diplomatic relations with)
2 were from the United Arab Emirates (also a powerful/oil-rich country the U.S. works hard to maintain diplomatic relations with)
1 was from Egypt, 1 from Lebanon.
None of the hijackers were from Iraq.
None of the Sept 11 hijackers were Iraqi.
None of the 9/11 hijackers were from Iraq.

my thoughts on this are that if one (former) hermit has let us and his community down majorly, the rest of the hermits have done themselves proud in their response. they were accessible for the victims to reach out to with their complaints. they then sought to verify them, and once they had, they directly addressed the situation in a swift and efficient manner. their statement allowed for the victims to offer their perspectives with their own voices, on their own terms, whilst preemptively warning us that they would be coming, and they had been confirmed and acted upon.
this has been dealt with extremely professionally, with care to protect the victims, and with clear decisiveness (especially from a server that is so famously indecisive, it required a coup to start its second season). this was not dragged out. allegations were not dragged through the mud and victims ripped apart by the jury of the internet. the hermits brought us a situation already resolved and within one day, we are already in the aftermath

Im really enjoying the discussion on how Joel managed to be the first to win a life series season by being a normal person, when in all previous series he was famously the complete opposite because it reminds me of just how insane he gets when he goes red. It’s so obvious he’s fighting tooth and nail to resist the urge to just go to town and murder everyone on the spot so he can have his chance at winning. But then he ends up risking his life anyways to ender pearl after the other remaining three players, runs head first into a three on one fight, chases Cleo down without hesitation, sadistically asking Ren if the poison hurts and once Ren dies from it he climbs up that tree and shoots that bird down with a smile on his face. He spent the whole season holding back and was sooo ready to let go

Nosferatu (2024) is unquestionably a multifaceted work, but what I personally consider to be the unifying idea behind its facets is that, for Ellen, Orlok represents validation.
Her fears are dismissed and called childish?.. He's a nightmarish manifestation of them.
She is consistently disrespected by everyone around her?.. He considers her his only equal. She never uses his title, it's permitted.
She is told to fix herself, misunderstood, and always isolated?.. He knows all the darkest parts of her and is delighted by them. He wants her just as she is, so much that he will lie, kill, and cross the ocean to find her.
The scene in their death/wedding bed is a direct parallel to the scene of her waking in that bed at the beginning of the film. She complains to Thomas that the "honeymoon is yet too short" and tries to pull him down with a kiss - however, he is worried about being late for work, and so he extricates himself and leaves. Cut forward to her sharing the same bed with Orlok, similarly early in the morning; he is startled by cock-crow and begins to rise, but she guides his head back down - and, even though he knows that he will die, he stays. He is her sexual and emotional desire, realized.
Given that there is a plethora of emotions Ellen is forced to suppress on daily basis, there is no singular correct interpretation of her relationship with Orlok. To erase any one of them is to render it shallower than it actually is; but there is no doubt as to why their attachment is mutual. To each, the other is something they’ve never had before.

i cant stop thinking about the fact that the us and uk killed one million people in indonesia as part of the cold war effort and barely anybody knows about it much less cares. trying to tell somebody about it especially in the west will just garner laughter and celebration -- genocide is okay if they are (true or suspected) communists, no matter what. one million people
